Overview:
SmartDocs 0.5.7-beta moves creation to a scroll-based workspace with pageless editing and chapter-at-a-time control, which paginates at export. Core tools—PDF import, AI templates—see major accuracy and workflow boosts, while brand-new features like version diffing, heading validation, and page preview arrive as an MVP for user feedback.
What's New
1. Pageless Editor and Digital Viewer
The SmartDocs editor and digital document viewer has been updated from a paginated to a pageless experience. This change was made to improve performance for very large documents, and allow the editor to more easily support a larger variety of fonts, styles, and other elements.
While users now create and view SmartDocs in a pageless format, the document will automatically paginated on export to PDF. A paged preview feature has been added to allow users to preview this final output. Editors are will be provided a variety of tools to control pagination in the PDF. Currently editors have the option to add manual page breaks.
2. Chapter-Based Editing
The SmartDocs editor has been updated so that users now edit a single document chapters at a time instead of the entire document. This change was made to improve performance for very large documents.
Users can create new chapters by selecting the + icon at the top of the document sidebar, reorder chapters by selecting the hamburger menu, and switch between chapters by selecting the chapter name. Currently, users will need to save their changes before switching chapters, but an autosave feature is planned for the next release.
3. Heading-Level Validation
The system will now prevent users from creating invalid document structures by restricting the available heading levels in the drop-down. In cases where users delete, or copy-paste, sections and appropriate placeholder structure will be created.
4. Page Preview Feature
Users can now view a preview of the paginated document in both the editor and reader by selecting the Preview button from the top-bar. This feature reflects current pagination logic and this feature will improve as additional rules are applied.
5. Document Version Diffing
Users can now easily view the differences between two versions of a document by selecting the Diffing button on the top bar (next to the Preview button). Currently, users have access to three views:
-
A unified view which shows content changes on a single document,
-
A split view which shows the two versions side-by-side, and
-
A operations view with technical details for developer debugging.
The diffing functionality is currently under development and users will see improvements in both the diffing logic and presentation in subsequent releases. User permissions will be added a later date to control access to these screens for different user types.
6. Improved PDF Import
The AI PDF import feature has been improved with a new workflow and using Gemeni 2.0. The new system provides superior fidelity for text, tables, images and page structure. In addition, the import process has been updated to conform with the new pageless editor.
7. Improved AI Templates
The AI Templates feature has been upgraded to handle additional document types - not just manuals - and can intelligently add new content within existing sections when prompted. Today the AI draws exclusively from your Regulations Module, but coming in May it will also search the web when no direct regulatory guidance exists and offer a more knowledgeable, ChatGPT-style experience.
